Thanks very much to Kevin from Brisbane for providing the photos for this page and the updated status. The club is now closed and abandoned and Kevin tells us "I know a bit about East Brisbane. They were affiliated with the Gateway District Bowls club, had an ever dwindling membership and came to rely on barefoot bowlers and functions to survive. Prior to disaffilating with the Gateway District they were reported to have 13 members. The existing members were elderley and could not continue to run the club as volunteer office bearers. The running of the club as ongoing business was handed over to a 'white knight' entrepenaur in 2009 however this appears to have been unsuccessful as the club closed its doors to bowlers soon after. East Brisbane being on such a busy road would not have helped its cause." Thanks Kevin, sad to see another one close.
In another email Kevin adds "It is sad to reflect on all the effort put into establishing these clubs and their facilities over many years. They would have taken great pride in their club and its demise would be very sad. It was their home away from home. 'Time waits for no man'" - indeed. Very poignant to see that the bus stop outside the old club is still called "East Brisbane Bowls".
If you have any information about this club and its history I would love to hear from you by email or in my Visitor's Book.
