Over the last 40 years or so (in Australia at least) the traditional old style strip of shops in the
suburbs has come under pressure from large shopping malls. Some still eke out a living but alas others
haven't been able to cope with the competition, especially those relying on lots of foot traffic for
enough trade.
This set of shops is in Badminton Street in the heart of suburban Mt Gravatt, just up the road from
where I live in Holland Park West. I stumbled across them when the main road was blocked and the police
were detouring traffic around the problem. They cut quite a mournful sight. Only two of the shops seem
to be occupied now, and one of those is by a Government community services office. All the usual
suspects are here, the newsagent, hairdresser, Chinese restaurant; all closed. Ah, progress. I tried
around the back of the shops to see if any were open so I could get some internal photos but almost got
attacked by the local Rottweiler so external photos will have to suffice!
I hope that all these small business operators have been able to make a fresh start elsewhere with a
little more future.

Looking down Badminton Street in Mount Gravatt past the abandoned strip of shops. One of
the cars is mine and the other sedan is parked outside the Government office. Dead as a
doornail, in the vernacular.
The closed "China Star" restaurant and Doctor's surgery. You don't often see this kind
of business close.
The local fish and chips is closed, too (that's the Government office to the left).
So too is the ladies hairdresser.
Even a combined newsagent, convenience store and dry cleaner couldn't survive.
In fact, apart from the Government "outpost", Rampant Technology is the only going
concern, it seems.
This is the accommodation back of the China Star (taken before the dog from hell
arrived!). Very confortable lodgings, even air-conditioned.
The apartment behind the hairdresser. Not quite as up-market as the China Star!
A less modern "convenience" rotting away in the overgrown yard behind one of the shops.
