Mary from Melbourne has shared this interesting personal story about St Luke's, Buranda and Mary Immaculate at Annerly: "Like you (but much earlier) I made my first communion at Mary Immaculate, Annerley and also attended the school until I transferred to St.Luke's in Buranda when the new school was finished in 1949. It was fun to go to a new school where everything was new and smelt new too. Some of my schoolmates transferred as well. The classes were very small and I was in a combined Gr. 6 and 7 class on the top floor. The Presentation Sisters taught us. Now I could walk to school in two minutes rather than have to take the tram along Ipswich Road to St.Joseph's. Did you know that it has/had a back gate as well as a front entrance? There is a rabbit warren of streets behind it and the back gate is the one we always used. I wonder if the back gate is still there? I have lived in Melbourne now for many years and rarely get the chance to walk around the old places in Brisbane." Thank you, I'll check on the back gate when I next pass by, Mary.
Most of the churches you'll see here are Catholic or Anglican, but I'll include any that catch my eye, regardless of their particular brand. Also see my page on regional churches for pictures of some really lovely country churches or the page on recycled churches for closed, abandoned and recycled churches.
