Spain is the country I find most interesting, and to which I feel the most affinity. If there is such a thing as reincarnation then I have definitely been a Spaniard in a past life! Seriously though, my mother's maiden name was Mendez and we know that that branch of the family were Spanish Sephardic Jews who came to Australia via London, probably via eastern Europe prior to that. Maybe that's why I love the place so much!
At the time of writing I have been to Spain for three trips each of 4 weeks duration in September and October of 2000, 2003 and 2006, and am planning to try for another trip in 2008. Previous trips have included many wonderful Spanish cities (click on any of the buttons on the left of screen to see the pictures taken in those places). The upcoming trip will hopefully add at least Galicia and Asturias and hopefully other as-yet un-visited locales!
Spain to me has a special ambience which I don't feel elsewhere. The people are outgoing and friendly and have a fascinating genetic mix including the original Iberians, Phoenicians, Celts, Romans, Jews, Visigoths and Arabs. The language, music, dance, architecture and food all reflect this richness. The Spanish language is like a living form of Latin in some respects, particularly the verbs, and fits with my interest in Roman history and the Latin language. As you probably have bathered, there's not much I don't like about Spain, so please join me in enjoying this photographic record of what I hope will be a continuous and comprehensive mission of discovery.
Anyone living in the Gold Coast or Tweed Valley regions of eastern Australia may be interested in our Spanish Language Conversation Group - all are welcome; just follow the link for details!
