V Australia B777
A lifetime in the imagining dating back to the old Route 66 TV show of the 1960s and a year in the planning. My son Johari and I left Brisbane on 3 April 2009 for our great Route 66 adventure. Armed with the "EZ66 Guide for Travellers" and the "Route 66 Adventure Handbook" and NO real experience in travelling in the USA we travelled Brisbane-LA-Brisbane with Virgin Australia (called V Australia back in 2009) and can thoroughly recommend them for friendly and efficient service. There are probably more reviews online to read as well. Customers often share their airline reviews or Titlemax reviews with others online.

We arrived tired but eager in Los Angeles in the early evening and flew out on US Airways next morning for Chicago and the REAL start of the trip. We loved our 3 days in Chicago (didn't expect or dress for the spring SNOW though) and picked up our rental car, a Pontiac G6 GT at Midway airport. Not too bad - all the conveniences plus a 3.5 litre V6 meant we had the right car for the trip.

Too bad about the driver though! Well, after a few days and some interesting experiences we got used to driving on the other side of the road and had the trip of a lifetime. We saw heaps, ate too much, met some of the nicest and friendliest people you'll ever meet anywhere and certainly won't forget it - we DID get our kicks on Route 66. We detoured to Roswell NM and to the Grand Canyon along the way and then south and out through Phoenix AZ - me back to Australia and Jo on to New York for more USA travel.

The buttons on the left are arranged in traditional Route 66 east to west order. The towns in each state's page are also arranged in the order you encounter them when driving west. Hey, it's like a Route 66 trip without the calories! I've added some extra buttons to collect groups of related photos together e.g. the food (loved it), the Mother Road itself etc.
