Wacol Vsitors Memories

When I first visited the base in May 2006, a large headquarters building in the eastern section of the base, near the main parade ground next to the Boundary Road entrance, looked just like any one of dozens of other buildings: walls partially removed (to check for asbestos I presume), the interior fittings removed etc. It still looked the same when we visited in June 2006.

What a change when we came back in July 2006. Where demolition had been completed on some buildings, e.g. the Sergeants Mess (see the Messes and Clubs page), this building was being refurbished, and not just the building but the surrounds. I had heard a rumour that consideration was being given to preserving the base area as an environmental refuge, rather than clearing it and selling it off to industry - perhaps this is the start of the process? Here are some "before" and "during" renovation shots.

Wacol - Large Headquarters Building Near Parade Ground Refurbishment 1

This is the main entrance of the building. New doors and stairs are fitted and the roof and walls have been tidied up. The painters trestles are visible.

Missing boards have been replaced and the building made watertight.

The rear section of the building has been repaired, a verandah is being constructed and landscaping materials have been positioned, indicating gardens etc will be established.

This is the view pre-refurbishment. Let's hope that many more buildings will be restored and preserved.
