We stayed two nights in the lovely, traditionally Spanish town of Burgos and it was nowhere enough!
Despite being on the pilgrimage route it is a quintessentially Spanish town. We arrived on Saturday
afternoon from Salamanca by train. By the time we has checked in to our hostel
the excellent Hostal Acacia
and made our way
to the picturesque esplanade along the river the whole town was out on a "paseo", that most civilised
of Spanish customs. Young and old, everyone was out in their best clothes, strolling along the treed
avenue or chatting in the plaza around the beautiful, and newly cleaned, cathedral. What a charming
place, and full of historical interest. The relics of St Theresa (of Avila) are kept in the Cathedral
here and were on display prior to being shown in various places around the world.
We found a wonderfully Catillian small restaurant where the cook presented us with with the regional
specialty (thinly sliced lamb chops) and the best house red wine I've ever had. We'll be back for more.

The magnificent Burgos Cathedral in all its refurbished splendour.
The side of the Cathedral at Burgos with one of those ubiquitous and distictive
street lamps from the 1830s in the foreground.

Here lies St Theresa of Avila.
The tranquil and charming esplanade along the riverside in Burgos.
Typical Burgos street scene and monument near the main bridge in the town centre.
Unusual apartments in Burgos with an archway through for the traffic. Notice the remnant
of the old city wall at the left of the apartments.
