Zaragoza is one of Spain’s best kept secrets and as a bonus it’s in Aragon, previously unvisited by me. It’s now linked to Madrid by the very fast Ave train and the comfortable journey is only an hour and a half. Originally the Roman town of Caesar Augusta, Zaragoza is full of the best of Spain; amazingly large plaza in front of the Basilica, Roman ruins, museums, interesting city centre, great food and drink; the list continues!
We stayed at the basic but very friendly and affordable and highly recommended Hostal El Descanso on Plaza San Pedro Nolasco and were very happy with the hostal and its location. They don’t do meals there but the owner will happily send you to her sister’s place, Pension la Peña (hidden away, but worth finding, in Calle de Cinegio), where the lunches are a family affair, full of regional delights, and are the biggest and best I’ve ever eaten in Spain (and that's saying something)!
Puente de Piedra (Bridge of Stone) is a mediaeval stone bridge (still in use today) which affords a grand view of Zaragoza and the (river) Rio Ebro. |
